San Jose State reading this Tuesday, September 30

I will bring Xeroxed waterlogged diaries from the trail, etchings, an early, abandoned cover of the book, a scary self-portrait photo and other artifacts to my reading at San Jose State University, where I am teaching creative nonfiction and essay writing this year. I will speak this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on the fifth floor of the beautiful, high-tech Martin Luther King Jr. library.

There will be cheese and wine. Here is a map of the campus, with parking and the library. I will sign books if you like, and this time I will bring along the full assortment of creature and flora stamps (ticks, cow skull, prickly pear, yucca, horny salamander, etc.)The event is sponsored by the Center for Literary Arts here at SJSU.

Later in the week, I will read in my newly adopted hometown of San Francisco:

I'll be honest, I'm reading Cactus Eaters right now and I'm just loving every bit of it. I can't get over how often you describe your girlfriend in the book so I hop online to find a picture of her and find your blog.

I've now spent the last hour or so reading most if not all of your old entries and they are just as brilliantly written as your book.

When are you doing any appearances in SoCal? I love the bay area, but a bit of reciprocal respect to the south land is being requested here.

Thanks for being a great writer, you're bringing me loads of entertainment lately and I'm really thankful for it.

thank you! I was in So.Cal for a bunch of events in the late summer including the American Library Association conference and a couple of events in the South Bay (where I was born and raised. )Lately I've been doing a bunch of events mostly in northern California and the Bay Area -- but I would love to swing back down there again this year. (I should have more updates soon on this blog.) dw

I have just finished reading my autographed copy of Cactus Eaters that I received at the ALA Convention in Anaheim, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I grew up in PV and after reading in "Meet Dan White" that you are "from Palos Verdes, CA," I'm curious, when and where did you live "on the hill"? Did you attend high school there?

Thanks for the kind words, and yes, I'm a former PV Peninsula resident. In fact I used to live quite close to Margate Intermediate School (now it has a different name) and I went to PVHS, from which I graduated way back in the '80s. I still visit when I can. (What a stunningly beautiful place.)
