Wondering why no one from Canada ever looks at my blog (updated, revised and reconsidered -- thank you, Canada.)
I'm getting some email inquiries from Singapore, Israel and Algeria. I've heard from England a couple of times, and Icelanders have discovered this site. But I'm wondering why no one from Canada ever writes in. I am trying to think of ways to make Cactuseaters appeal to Canadians more overtly. At the same time, I don't want to pander by throwing in references to the obvious Canada-related topics such as grizzly bears, Seth Rogen, Sealtest Ice Cream, Neil Young and Neal Peart's lyrics to "Subdivisions.'' Stay tuned. I'm going to mess with the formula to make Cactuseaters more Canada-friendly in the future. And here is my addendum to this thoroughly outdated post: thank you, Canada. In the past few months I have received many heartening and inspiring messages from people living in all parts of Canada, including one who recently bought The Cactus Eaters and a two-year subscription to Catamaran Literary Reader!! It just goes to show that my efforts to make this blog more Canada-friendly have paid off in a big way.

Hi Dan, I think that may be Crescent's way of saying "Hi, I really like your blog" in "Canadian". haha, just kidding. I'm from Canada and I didn't understand one word either. Well, maybe one word..I think I caught 'thank' and 'good bye' in there. (he's friendly, he must be a Canadian lol).
Have you had many Canadians writing/following your blog since you posted this a long while back? You got the Sealtest Ice cream and Neil Young right, those are definite Canadian hits :)
(oh and of course we can't forget Seth Rogen!)
I was born and raised in Canada (from Ottawa) which is actually only 1 hour from the US border-NY state). After all these years I still wonder why I haven't moved to California or Florida where it's warm and sunny most of the year! It's beautiful here too, but extremely cold in the winter (particularly Ottawa compared to Vancouver, for example). We get lots of snow, which is nice, but not for 4 months straight unless you're an avid skier (I enjoy it a couple times during the winter, but that's about it).
Actually, it's more the cold I don't like and the wind-chill- often in January it's O degrees F (-20 celsius). And because I work outside, it's even worse, I can't escape it! :) You just can't enjoy walking outside for long, let alone hiking and exploring the back country when you can't feel your toes.
Anyway, what I really wanted to say (LOL) was that I just finished your book and absolutely loved it! Amazing story and very well written. It's one of those rare travel adventure stories that I got sucked right in and had a hard time putting it down. It's a fantastic story, congratulations on doing the trail and writing your book! I've been telling many folks about it, I'm sure you are having great success with it.
I've started writing a travel book too on my roadtrips across North America and although it's not even close to your story (just the travel part), you've given me inspiration to keep working on it, to travel more & to keep doing what I love. Thank you!!
