Off to the forest

Friends and family --- after I file this, I'm heading out the door and flying out to the Southeastern backwoods, which means that I will be kind of hard to reach for the next three days or so. I'm bringing lots of MREs and a spanking-new seven-dollar nickel-plated compass that I just bought from Robert's Hardware in Haight Ashbury. I'm in good hands. By the way, this is probably my last ramble ever with Big Mofo, my trusty -- and enormous --- backpack dating from the PCT. He's covered with mouse bites and duct tape, the zippers barely function and the hinges are almost rusted out. The time has come for an upgrade.

Dan! I can't tell you what a kick it was to walk into a bookstore in downtown Minneapolis and find "Cactus eaters" on the shelf. It cost me $16.02, and I spent it eagerly, knowing that those two pennies will come in handy for you. Thanks so much for the shout-out, and I look forward to digging into this tonight. Oh, and by the way, I walked into Will Tacy's office here and showed it to him. He laughed. -- James

Dan,
I loved the way you animated & personified your back pack by calling him "Big Moffo". It's funny how things tend to grow on us and take on a life of their own. Can't wait till you a your Book Signing Brigade make it out here to the Midwest Marketing territories of Cleveland-Columbus & Cincinatti so that I can introduce you to "Old Abe" and his Gorgous Young Newly Wed Wife, "Goldie Locks".
